Our History
Nicewander, Berens & DeVries is the longest-established law firm in the Jenison-Hudsonville-Grandville area. The law firm originally started in 1975 when Rich Black established the first law firm in Jenison. Dave Hall joined him 2 years later. Don Nicewander joined the firm in 1979 and the law firm became Black, Hall and Nicewander.
The firm moved from its original Cottonwood office to its current location at 513 Baldwin in 1982. Terry Berens joined the firm in 1992 and Jim DeVries joined 2 years later in 1994 to form Nicewander, Berens & DeVries. Mark Greidanus joined the firm in 2022.
For over 40 years, the law firm has continued to grow along with the Jenison-Hudsonville-Grandville area. Rich Black, Dave Hall and Don Nicewander have since retired from the firm.
Our Philosophy
We are committed to practice law in a manner that exhibits the highest ethical standards, not only with our clients but also with our opponents. That means that there may be times when we not only discuss the “legal” thing to do but also the “right” thing to do.
We are strong believers in the importance of family and community, so we have structured our practice to allow the attorneys and staff to spend time with their families. For that reason, we try to avoid working evenings and weekends.
We believe in efficiency. Our goal is to provide very high quality legal services at a fair price. We are not the lowest-price provider of legal services in the area, but we believe that you will not find a higher quality of legal services for the cost.
We believe in specialization. Each attorney, and most of the staff, have developed areas of expertise. Using a team approach, NBD can use the unique skills and experience of the attorneys and staff to most efficiently and effectively assist clients in their matters. One attorney has primary responsibility for a client matter and other attorneys and staff may be called on to assist. In this way we can maintain a close personal relationship while effectively assisting the client.
The attorneys and staff of NBD work very hard to meet the legal needs of clients in a professional, competent and efficient manner. We have represented over 1,000 businesses and many thousands of individuals in the Eastern Ottawa County and Western Kent County area.
